How to turn Gemini Notebook, Gemini, and ChatGPT into a study partner for a real course. It comes down to one idea and five layers. Each layer does one job. You don't need all of them.
The one idea
Hand the AI your course material and ask it to answer only from that material, with citations. A tutor that is always available and patient, and can't make things up without you noticing.
Why it matters: when you're studying, a confident wrong answer is worse than no answer. Citations let you check every claim against your own material.
The three tools
Gemini NotebookFormerly NotebookLM. Upload your files; it answers from them with citations and makes study materials.
GeminiGoogle's general assistant. Gems and notebooks save a tutor for each course.
ChatGPTOpenAI's assistant. Projects hold a course's files and instructions.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini have a model picker at the top of the chat, and the defaults lean toward the quick mode: fine for trivia, weak for studying. New users ask a question, get a shallow answer, and decide the tool is bad. The fix is one click.
Try it: pick a mode
Answer depth{{ modeSel.title }}
{{ modeSel.verdict }}
Rule of thumb: if an answer seems off, check the mode before you rewrite the question.
Save an assistant with standing instructions and your course files attached: a Gem or notebook in Gemini, or a Project in ChatGPT. Build one per course. The instructions have three parts, and the third is the one people skip.

Attach the syllabus (separate topic files work too), test it in Thinking mode, check that answers cite the syllabus, then save. Tighten the instructions over time: tone, length, formality.
Formerly called NotebookLM, Gemini Notebook lives at notebook.google.com. It has three panels: Sources (your files), Chat (cited Q&A), and Studio (generated study materials). It copes with big files: a 547-page syllabus uploaded as one PDF works.
HABIT 1Open Configure notebook, switch to Learning guide with shorter responses, then add your own rules: answer in bullets, suggest follow-up questions, correct me immediately.
HABIT 2Hover over every numbered citation. Clicking one jumps to the exact passage in your document.
Sorting game: when would you use each Studio output?
Studio offers nine outputs. They're easier to remember grouped by when they help. Assign each one, then check.

✏️ Almost every output has a pencil icon. Use it to set quantity and difficulty, and to aim the output: name your program and year, narrow it ("focus only on physical brain damage"), or weight what your instructor emphasizes. Selecting only some sources before generating scopes the output to those sources.
In Sources, Search for new sources on the web (Quick or Deep) returns candidates you review before importing. A simple first filter: drop forum threads (like Reddit) and anything tangential, then import the rest and toggle checkboxes to ask questions of only the new sources, only the syllabus, or both. YouTube links can be added directly, useful when someone explains a topic well.
Vetting practice: keep or drop?
Example search results for "Descartes' dualism" (made up for practice). Apply the filter: drop forum threads and anything tangential.

Discussion prompt: "drop forums and tangents" is a starting point, not a full vetting method. What else would you check before importing a source? Think author, date, evidence, and who published it.
🎧 VoiceFor commutes and walks. Open your course notebook in the Gemini Notebook mobile app, or your course Project in ChatGPT, and talk to it. It can quiz you hands-free, like a phone call.Three ways to use it. Pick one:

🧮 Canvas mini-appsFor technical subjects that text doesn't serve well. Ask Gemini's Canvas for a tool in one line, like a VAT calculator or a sine-wave visualizer, and it builds it. If the first version breaks, it usually flags the error and regenerates.Heads up: AI-built tools can be wrong. Test with values you already know before you trust one. ChatGPT's Canvas is gone; Gemini's still works.
